UN Geneva | Christians in the Middle East: Citizenship, Human Rights and their Future
27th Session of the UN Human Rights Council: Side Event
Geneva, 15 September 2014
In the face of the deteriorating situation of Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq and Syria, the WCA is co-organizing the following side event during the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva:
Christians in the Middle East:
Citizenship & Human Rights and their Future
Tuesday, 16 September 2014
14:00 – 16:00h
Palais des Nations, Geneva, Room XXI
The side event is co-organized by the World Council of Arameans (Syriacs) and the two Geneva-based organizations of the Association for Reconciliation, Unity and Peace & Caritas in Veritate. Support is given by the Centre d’Etudes Catholiques from Geneva and Aid to the Church in Need. The Permanent Mission of the Holy See at the United Nations is the co-hosting State. Further co-sponsoring states include the USA, Canada, Austria and Poland.
Religious leaders and other high-ranking speakers representing the largest Christian Churches in the Middle East will address the international community. They will report on the dramatic situation of Christians in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria, who are the victims of systematic violations of human rights and even genocide. The region's native Aramean population and other Christian communities are threatened with extinction in their historical homelands where their rich cultural heritage has also been severely destroyed.
In addition, the speakers will explain the wider challenges and issues related to this crucial topic and propose recommendations to resolve the internationally neglected question.
Everyone is cordially invited to attend this historic event. Should you wish to register for this conference and receive further information, kindly contact Mr. Basil Özkaya at
