Formidable SUA Delegation special guest of Turkish Delegation to Parliamentary Assembly Council of Europe
On Monday 11 and Wednesday 13 April 2011, respectively, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). During this time, a formidable SUA Delegation will be the special guest of the Turkish Delegation to the PACE.
Earlier this year, from 24 till 27 January, the SUA attended the First part of the 2011 Ordinary Session of the PACE where again Turkey’s Foreign Minister delivered a speech as well Turkey's President Abdullah Gül. The SUA also attended the press conference of the Turkish President. Additionally, the SUA President held an official meeting with Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, the President of the PACE on behalf of Turkey. This time, the SUA will be present at the Second part of the 2011 Ordinary Session of the PACE. During a historical occasion, and followed by Suryoyo Sat, the international satellite channel of the Aramean people, a high-level SUA Delegation will be the special guest of the Turkish Delegation to the PACE. The SUA will be attending meetings and hold special side meetings with Turkish Delegates and other high ranking officials.
The topics of the meetings concern the questions of the Aramean (Syriac) people in Turkey which the SUA attempts to bring to the attention of the Turkish Government. One of the major questions that is of serious concern to the SUA is whether the Aramean people are enabled, with the moral and material support of the Turkish Government, to build up a bright and secure future in Tur-Abdin, the Aramaic name of part of the ancient homeland of the Aramean people and civilization in today's Southeast Turkey.
The SUA has been granted this special access given its preeminent position within the Aramean community. More significantly perhaps, the meetings also follow on the back of the SUA's effective work at the United Nations as an NGO, the PACE Resolution 1704 (see this video) and the recent EU Progress Report 2010 on Turkey -- the reference to the Aramean (Syriac) people in the latter two documents were lobbied for successfully by the SUA. The SUA sincerely appreciates the warm reception shown by the Turkish hosts who are representing the leading ruling party at the PACE, namely the Justice and Development Party.
