NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION IN SPECIAL CONSULTATIVE STATUS WITH THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL OF THE UNITED NATIONS

Christians mentioned yesterday in the UN Security Council -- WCA's work bearing fruit

New York, 19 April 2013 – Yesterday, the Syrian Ambassador to the United Nations, H.E. Bashar Ja’afari, addressed the Security Council in New York at a special session on Syria. He expressed Syria’s grave concerns about the Christians of the Middle East who are killedin and uprooted from their ancient homelands. He called upon the Council tohelp Syria protect Christianity in his country and prevent another Iraq scenario.

The Ambassador alarmed the Council that Christianity is becoming extinct on its ancestral soil, because radical Islamists, who themselves are funded and supported by some countries, are "seeking to displace" these natives "outside of their homelands." "Hundreds of churches," he stressed, "have been burned by them in Syria and other places." Now they are "about to succeed in evacuating our Christian citizens," he warned the Council and ask the intentional community to act against this reality (see 1:05:50 http://webtv.un.org/watch/the-situation-in-the-middle-east-syria-security-council-6949th-meeting/2310253195001).

The message of the WCA is finally being heard by the Syrian government after our continuous contact with officials such as Mr. Ja’afari himself, whom we recently met at his office in New York. The WCA will continue to inform the international community about the plight of the Aramean Christians and ask other governments to equally raise the neglected question of the disappearing Christians of the Middle East.
